Las Cataratas Group's story

Quetzaltenango is the name of a state/department. as well as the name of the 2nd largest city in Guatemala. The Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Las Cataratas” or “The Waterfalls”, formed by 8 Maya K’iche ladies, lives here & is starting their 1st loan cycle with KIVA.

They weave/embroider traditional colorful textiles & sell meat in the local market. Their monthly educational training, part of the “Microcredit Plus” program of loans & education, benefits them in many ways. The women acquire basic business tools like budgeting, planning, investing & savings. They also learn how to more effectively care for their families & themselves. The “Salud Para La Vida” program is another “plus” service that gives the ladies access to basic health care.

Elisa, a 27 year old mother of 3 children (8 mo-8 yrs), has an 8th grade education. She has worked hard so that the oldest child studies in the 2nd grade. Elisa has a traditional textile business. She is requesting a loan to buy various colors of thread at the wholesale level. Elisa looks forward to expanding production, increasing income, and supporting the present & future educational needs of her children.

KIVA investors are greatly appreciated by Elisa & her friends in the Trust Bank. They are empowering themselves, educating their children & eliminating poverty in their lives. Thank you!
