San Jose Group's story

The Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “San Jose” is located in the department/state of Solola. It was formed by 7 Maya Kaqchikel ladies who have completed elementary school. Some have had more education. They are requesting a loan to invest in their businesses that include the fabrication/sales of beautiful colorful traditional blouses or “huipiles”, as well as other traditional pieces of clothing & clothing for babies. They are excited to begin their 1st KIVA loan cycle!

The Secretary of the group is 25 year old Laura who has a teacher’s certificate. She is married with 2 children (2,5). Laura is requesting a loan for her textile business. She plans to buy high quality thread in various colors, clothing for babies & some “huipiles”. Her children are her motivation to work hard on a daily basis & bring them a higher standard of living.

The women look forward to their monthly meetings when they make payments on their loans & participate in educational trainings, part of the “Microcredit Plus” program of loans + education. They learn about effective business practices like planning, budgeting, investing & savings, as well as prioritizing expenses. The ladies also gain useful information about caring for their families & themselves.

The success of the “San Jose” Trust Bank would not be possible without the partnership between KIVA & Friendship Bridge. Thank you to each of you who believe in Laura & her friends in the group!
