Gbatima Group's story

Sarah J. is the leader of a group of five borrowers called Gbatima. She is a 32-year-old married woman with five children, aged between 9 and 17 years old and in 6th to 10th grade. Sarah dropped out of school at 5th grade due to poverty. She and her family live in Siaza town, Virginia, and sell in the Banjour Market, north of the Liberian capital, Monrovia. Sarah buys food ingredients and sells them to the residents of Siaza town, Virginia. She has been running her business for five years and has been grateful to the business for helping her and her family. Sarah's difficulty is the competition at the market as there are many vendors selling the same goods as she does. However, she talks to her customers in a good manner, and this encourages them to buy from her. Sarah is requesting a loan to buy more food ingredients, such as tins of oil, seasoning, pepper and bags of rice, to improve her business. She is hoping to establish a bigger shop in the future in order to make enough profit to build a house for her family.
