Mwase 2 Group's loan finished fundraising, but these other borrowers need your support

A loan helped to buy a cookstove, fuel pellets and a solar system for lighting and phone charging.

Mwase 2 Group's story

Fumu is 24 years old, but he's already been farming for six years. He's happy that it was inexpensive to start farming but now a lack of capital is a challenge in expanding his business. He dreams of being a big farmer one day!

Fumu is choosing to buy a clean cookstove, fuel pellets made from waste wood, and a solar system for lighting and phone recharging primarily because he and his wife want to save the time currently spent looking for firewood. He also thinks it's important to do his part to help fight deforestation in Zambia.

In conjunction with these purchases, Fumu and Mwase 2 Group are also participating in an innovative pigeon pea program. Farmers receive seeds and training for growing pigeon peas, a crop that is well suited to the dry conditions of eastern Zambia, naturally improves soil fertility, and provides income and protein.

After harvest the farmers trade waste plant stalks (then recycled into fuel pellets for the stoves) as well as pigeon peas with Kiva's field partner Emerging Cooking Solutions as payment for their renewable energy products.
