A loan helped to stock more sacks of charcoal.

Joelia's Group's story

Joelia's group is composed of two hardworking women. Joelia is 19 years old and lives in the town of Buwama in the Kyengera region of Uganda. For the past two years, Joelia has been working hard to manage her charcoal business.

To help expand her business, Joelia has requested a share of 2,500,000 Ugandan shillings (UGX) from BRAC Uganda. The loan will be used to stock more sacks of charcoal. It will help Joelia to generate greater profits and be in a position to continue with her studies.

Joelia hopes that in the future, she will be able to to have the biggest charcoal business in the community.

Joelia is a member of BRAC's Empowerment and Livelihood for Adolescents (ELA) program. In addition to microfinance loans, the program provides both a safe place for young Ugandan women to take part in group activities, and a forum for life-skills training.
