A loan helped to buy timber for manufacturing furniture.

Zimiseleni Group's story

Nokuthula is a 35-year-old mother of three, who are all going to school and she has to meet their basic needs. She lost her husband in 2010 but is managing to send her children to school without anyone’s help even though she is unemployed. If you ask her the secret behind her story, she always replies, “It takes hard work, commitment and discipline for a single mother to raise her children.”

She is involved in the business of manufacturing furniture in a home industrial area in Harare. She subcontracts the carpenters who operate at the area to do her orders, mostly of wardrobes, sofas, chairs, beds and any other wooden furniture. In this business all she needs to do is to buy timber that is required in the carpentry process. She however does not concentrate in the furniture business alone; she is a renowned tailor at the home industries. She offers tailoring services by sewing mattresses for carpenters who manufacture beds. She is also paying monthly installments for her residential stand, and she hopes that soon she will be able to build a decent home. She has a two-roomed cottage which she is using with her children. Nokuthula received a loan of $350 to buy timber for manufacturing furniture. She wants to manufacture five wardrobes so as to meet the needs of her customers who have given her orders.
