Chopopabaj Group's story

The department/state of Totonicapán is in the cool area of Guatemala's Western Highlands & is the home of the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Chopopabaj” with 12 Maya K’iche’ speaking members. They are entrepreneurs with small businesses raising/selling animals, or making/selling products like backpacks & plastic baskets. The women are looking forward to their second loan cycle with Kiva & infusing capital into their businesses. They want to be successful & provide a better quality of life for their families.

Santos is a member who is 38 years old, married & has 4 children (2-12 years). With only a second grade education, she is happy her eldest children are in school from the second to sixth grades. Santos has a small farm raising/selling pigs & chickens. She also makes beautiful plastic baskets. She is requesting a loan to buy a pig, 2 dozen chickens & 25 pounds of plastic to make more baskets. Santos dreams of her businesses becoming self-sustaining & prosperous with a continuing income.

With the help of the Friendship Bridge "Microcredit Plus" program of loans + education, Santos will see her dreams come true through attending the monthly meetings where she is provided essential business tools like budgeting, planning, investing & savings. She will also learn about health, hygiene, the use of medicinal plants, & nutrition. Rosa is grateful to Kiva lenders & Friendship Bridge for providing the financial & educational support that offers her a pathway to a brighter future.
Many thanks!
