Sadie's story

I grew up in a family of doers. Everyone I was surrounded by, my grandfathers, my mom and dad, my aunt and uncles, even my neighbors, were self-employed. My sister and I worked for my mom, helping to pack orders of her handmade scarves and mittens. On the side, I borrowed space in her workshop to start my own silkscreening company when I was 16, selling tee shirts from my high school locker between classes. I always knew I would be self-employed, not because it was better than a traditional career, but because I had no idea that there was any other option. When I launched Bread SRSLY, I ran it like a hobby business, as all my other businesses had been run. It only took me a few months to realize I was on to something good - and that my expertise at running businesses was close to zero. I signed up for a business class at the Women's Initiative for Self Employment and learned enough to get my feet under me, but more importantly, I started to create a network of advisors and supporters through the class. 5 years later, I am still benefiting from lessons I learned and connections I made at WISE, and from the confidence I gained by learning how to run a successful business.
