Katherine's story

Hi! Kate Owens, Kate’s Kuts! I am fortunate to be creating great days surrounded by my husband, my five boys, my friends, and devoted clientele. As a student in Marlborough, Massachusetts, I focused on being different from everyone else in that small town: I wanted my name in lights. After graduating from cosmetology school and flying through unfulfilling jobs, I learned that dreaming wasn’t going to help me make a difference. When my aunt asked that I move down to Florida to open a barber shop with her, I quit my job and flew to Florida for a new opportunity in Bonita Springs, Florida for my son and I. In taking the risk to work with my aunt and independently raise my son, I began to feel confident in my trade. Soon after, I met my husband on the football field via our scheming first grade sons. In 2011, I was terrified to find out that I was diagnosed with meningitis. I lay in a hospital bed for eight days. In an act of fear and desperation, I made a deal with God: if He let me live, He would not be disappointed! Miraculously, two days later, I was discharged. My doctor told me it would take six weeks to recover, but four weeks later I was opening my business, Kate’s Kuts. I had $5,000 from an income tax check, a few bottles of shampoo, and a dream. Since then, my business has grown to a staff of 22 women; their talent and dedication make coming to work everyday fun. My goal is to grow Kate’s Kuts into an organization that empowers a stylist to be her own boss. So that, like me, she transforms from student to entrepreneur with guidance, support, and leadership backing and inspiring her.
