A loan helped transform our first laundromat into a vibrant social hub that celebrates arts, culture and community covering costs associated with renovations, purchasing equipment, and working capital for my b corp.
I grew up in extreme poverty. I know what It's like to wear dirty clothes, and spend a lot of time at laundromats when we had the quaters to wash & dry our clothes. Through higher education and with the support of amazing mentors, I broke the cycle of poverty. I hadn't been in a laundromat for decades until our home washer & dryer weren't working. Negative memories flooded back as soon as I stepped into a laundromat recently. In that moment I became committed to turning these underperforming community assets into vibrant social hubs that celebrate arts, culture and community. Near that same time, our mentee was struggling with finding his first job. He's a 16.5 year old youth in our foster care system, and was lacking confidence to navigate the job search process. By being by his side through this experience, I realized that I could marry two passions together: place-making and empowering opportunity youth. I stepped away from 20 years as a nonprofit executive to start Social Spin, and have not regretted this decision. I've engaged my former connections, and they're generously accelerating our work! Our wash & fold and dry cleaning services start 8/21, and we're very close to securing our first of many laundromats. I'm a proven social entrepreneur, having launched countless programs and services for our most vulnerable populations. Examples include: established a comprehensive domestic violence programs in rural AZ, created an online platform that connects nonprofit agencies to leaders who want to serve, and established a statewide sex trafficking identification program in reproductive health centers.
