Utloang Group's story

Mathabo is a 59-year-old mother of five children and a wife to a 70-year-old husband. Her eldest child is 36 while the youngest is 21 years old. She has nine grandchildren, the eldest being 17 years old and the youngest is 2. She used to walk long distances to collect wood as this is a woman's job in Lesotho. As there is no electricity in her village, paraffin and candles are the main commodities used for light. These are very costly as a litre of paraffin costs 15, while a packet of candles costs 20. Paraffin is usually purchased every two days.

When asked if she is saving any amount, Mathabo says she is not as she has insufficient income. The little she gets from her produce in the fields is spent on essentials for the family. With the purchase of the ACE1 stove, she says she will save on paraffin, candles and cell phone charging. Moreover, she wont have to travel long distances to collect wood anymore as the stove uses small sticks to start the fire.
