Las Gaviotas Group's story

Bertha, a 52 year old married mother of 6 children who are aged from 21 to 30, is the Treasurer of the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Las Gaviotas” or “The Sea Gulls”. She lives in a rural area in the state of Chimaltenango. They have various businesses like raising/selling animals or selling “Omnilife” health support products. The women are beginning their 2nd loan cycle with KIVA.

The members of the group participate in monthly educational training, part of the “Microcredit Plus” program (loans + education). Taking part in games & role playing, as well as seeing pictures & diagrams help them learn about reproductive health, basic life skills & self -esteem. They also are able to access preventative health services through mobile clinics led by nurses who speak their indigenous language. This program is called “Health for Life”. This is especially useful for women like Bertha who only has a 2nd grade education.

Bertha sells health products in different areas around her town. She wants to have plenty of inventory on hand & is requesting a loan to buy various healthy drinks like juices & special smoothies. With her perseverance & determination, she would be successful.

With the help of KIVA investors, the tide is being turned on generational poverty in Guatemala. Now, Bertha & her friends have the opportunity to create a brighter future. Thank you!
