José Alfredo's story
José Alfredo L. L. is a 50 year old man who lives in Los Tijos de Upala in Alajuela province. It is a rather widespread rural community with a semi-mountainous topography in Costa Rica, Central America. The community focuses on growing basic grain and on a small scale, livestock. He lives with his wife and two children. For the past few years José Alfredo has developed his business. He has a small plot of land where he grows Ñampi, a small tuber with a pleasant flavor, rich in nutrients, with wide agro-industrial application and is in great demand in Costa Rica as well as other countries. He says that thanks to this project he has learned a lot and it also has provided him the opportunity to develop himself personally and professionally. Today José Alfredo is seeking a loan for ¢680,000 colones to help prepare the farmland, buy seeds, fertilizers, and other items needed to guarantee a successful planting of ñampi. With this investment he hopes to have a good harvest, with products worthy of a high price. He would like to do more projects in the future and also improve his family’s living conditions. José Alfredo is a member of the Los Tijos Communal Credit Business, one of 100 EDESA member organizations in Costa Rica. This will be his fifth loan and he says that he hopes to continue growing his business and keep it moving forward successfully.
