Arca Del Saber Group's story

The “Microcredit Plus” program of Friendship Bridge, combining loans & education, gives 8 Maya Kaqchikel women in the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Arca del Saber” essential tools for success in their personal, family & business lives. They live around Chimaltenango, a large town close to the capital. The majority of the ladies have a 9th grade education. They have bakeries, traditional textile businesses, tortilla shops, convenience stores and sell firewood. They are thrilled to begin their 1st loan cycle with Kiva. The women meet monthly to make payments on their loans and participate in educational training that cover topics ranging from the use of medicinal plants, health, hygiene & nutrition to business planning & investing. They are eager to learn & apply the information to their businesses, families & themselves.
Bernarda, a 60-year-old widow with a 6th grade education, is the mother of 8 children all over the age of 23. She has worked hard so that they could study at the high school & university level. She has a traditional textile business & makes magnificent, colorful blouses or “huipiles”. She is requesting a loan to buy lots of colors of thread for the business.
Bernarda also works hard in the “Arca del Saber” Trust Bank & occupies the position of President. Each month, she calls the meeting to order & conducts the business of the group. Bernarda & the ladies send their gratitude to Kiva investors for funding their much needed loans. Thank you!
