Justino's story

I was born and raised in Caguas, Puerto Rico. Since I was a kid I had an interest in growing food and plants, my mother was a very big part of this, she loved agriculture and helped me grow my own produce in our garden. I've always been an entrepreneur of sorts, in my childhood I remember collecting my produce, packing it and selling it around my neighborhood so that I could have some money to buy candy and go to the movies. Growing up I decided to study Communications, even got a Masters Degree and went off to work in that industry but always interested in agriculture and it wasn't until 4 years ago when I was unemployed that decided to go to a hydroponic class and began experimenting with different vegetables in my own backyard. My family and neighbors began showing an interest in my crops and I started selling them my produce, specially romaine lettuce, eventually I started selling a little in my local supermarkets and at age 50 with the help of my wife and daughters decided to make this my living and started our business Huerto Isleño, Inc. At this time we have a farm with 8 greenhouses and we sell our romaine lettuce to various supermarkets around the Island. We hope to create more jobs and keep contributing to Puerto Rico's economy and food sustainability.
