Las Flores Santa Marta Group's story

The Friendship Bridge Trust Bank "Las Flores de Santa Marta" is located in a small town in Sacatepéquez, Guatemala & is the home of an annual Day of the Dead kite festival that draws visitors from around the world in November. There are 10 enthusiastic members who want to grow their small businesses that are mainly agricultural (vegetables). They are beginning their 1st loan cycle with KIVA.

One of the members is 21 year old Florentina, who is married & has 2 children (a 13 month boy & a 3 year old girl). Unfortunately, Florentina did not have a formal education. She & her husband are farmers who have a small plot of land growing vegetables like tomatoes & chillis. They also buy vegetables from neighboring farmers & then go to Guatemala City to sell them in the vegetable market there. With the loan, Florentina plans to buy seeds & fertilizer for her plants. Florentina's long term goal is expand her business in order to create a better future for her children, including saving for their education.

Besides the loan, Florentina participates in monthly educational lessons about family, health, business administration & women's issues including self-esteem & empowerment. These are a part of the “Microcredit Plus” program of loans & education of Friendship Bridge. Each month as she becomes more empowered, Florentina is closer to achieving her goal - to create a better future for her children. Thank you, KIVA investors, for your generosity & support!
