Habibu's loan finished fundraising,
but these similar borrowers just need a little more help to reach their goals!

A loan helped to buy higher-yielding maize seeds plus pesticides and fertilizers based on his field's assessment.

Habibu's story

Habibu is a hardworking Babban Gona maize farmer who lives in a modest cement house with his family in Dinika village. Before joining Kiva's field partner, Habibu was only able to feed his family two meals a day despite toiling for long hours on his farm.

Now that he is a Babban Gona member, with this 93,772 NGN loan Habibu will be provided with higher-yielding maize seeds that are locally adapted and widely accepted in his community. He will also have the recommended pesticides and fertilizers based on the results of his field assessment. This will enable him to optimize his yield, where he can attain yields of up to 3.8 metric tons per hectare, two times the national average in Nigeria.

With an increase in his income of about 2.8 times the national average, Habibu will be able to continue to provide for his family. He will use the income generated from his maize sales this season to pay his children's school fees and also buy more farmland.

Reflecting on the great experience he has had with Kiva's field partner Babban Gona so far, Habibu is confident that he will overcome poverty, securing a strong future for generations to come.
