A loan helped us to build our Compassion School for 3-5 year olds, adding to the sustainability of our farm animal sanctuary.
My whole life I dreamed of working with animals. When my library branch closed down for a year of renovations, I sought an adventure that would bring me back to those aspirations. I took on two internships on small dairy farms in the mountains of North Carolina and Hawaii. Though these farms did not turn out to be the bucolic and pastoral experiences I was seeking, I did find that I had a true calling and genuine connection in working with farm animals. It was second-nature that before I even had a farm of my own, I began to rescue the goats I had loved and worked with from the trucks going to slaughter when their usefulness at the dairy was through. The back-breakingly hard work was pure joy to me and soothed the anxiety I had lived with for years prior. We left North Carolina with my herd of 16 goats, 24 birds, 8 cats and three dogs in a converted church van, built out with cattle panels and hay feeders, and a rickety used airport shuttle bus hauling all of the feeders, fencing and farm equipment I'd collected as well as my personal belongings. That three day journey to Colorado was one of the most terrifying and awe-inspiring things ive ever done and it solidified my commitment to the animals who have become my family. While I've always considered myself a savvy business person, my struggle and climb to find success in this field has been driven by my tenacity to keep my animal family fed, healthy, happy and loved.
