Sharifah's loan finished fundraising, but these other borrowers need your support

A loan helped to stock more sacks of charcoal, hair braids, and hair treatment for her two businesses.

Sharifah's story

Sharifah is 25 years old and lives in the town of Bulenga in the Kiyinda region of Uganda. She has one child who is currently in school. For the past five years, Sharifah has been working hard to manage her charcoal and beauty salon businesses. She sells charcoal and does hair dressing.

To help expand her business, Sharifah has requested a loan of 800,000 UGX from BRAC Uganda. The loan will be used to stock more sacks of charcoal, hair braids, and hair treatment for her two businesses. It will help Sharifah to generate greater profits to support her child and pay school fees.

Sharifah hopes that in the future she will be able to provide for her family but being a single mother, she has to work hard to save some money that she will use to pay school fees up to when her child completes university. She also wants to construct a house for shelter which will reduce their cost of living.

Sharifah is a member of BRAC's Empowerment and Livelihood for Adolescents (ELA) program. In addition to microfinance loans, the program provides both a safe place for young Ugandan women to take part in group activities and a forum for life-skills training.
