Teresa's story

Teresa is the proud owner of her own in-home daycare business in Massachusetts. In her home country of Ecuador she was also a businesswoman. Ten years ago she came to the United States to start something new and it was natural for her to pursue a business of her own. Teresa is married with two children. Her husband cleans commercial businesses and her two children are grown professionals. Teresa has had a low number of children this summer, which can be a common challenge for many daycare providers. To help her through the fluctuation in her income, she has requested a loan from ACCION USA to provide her with working capital and to purchase supplies and toys for the children. This loan will help her to stay in business during the slow season. Without the loan she was worried that she may have to close her doors. Teresa has been a victim of predatory lending in the past, but working with ACCION USA she says: "I felt secure – they gave me a hope, a medium, a way to continue forward; they’ve opened a pathway to proceed." Teresa adores children. She says that it is a lot of responsibility to care for other people's children – their safety is her top concern. Currently Teresa has two employees and she has even higher hopes for the future. Teresa's plan is to one day own a daycare training institute where she would train future daycare providers.
