Orquideas De Comalapa Group's loan finished fundraising,
but these similar borrowers just need a little more help to reach their goals!

A loan helped to buy a variety of different colored threads for weaving traditional belts, as well as "huipiles".

Orquideas De Comalapa Group's story

Friendship Bridge has about 30,000 clients throughout Guatemala who each belong to a group or a Trust Bank where they have the opportunity to participate in the "Microcredit Plus" program of education + loans. They meet monthly to make payments on their loans & then participate in beneficial trainings in 4 main areas - women, health, family & business.

One of the Trust Banks is “Orquideas De Comalapa” located in the beautiful Central Highland state or department of Chimaltenango. Seven Maya Kaqchikel women make up the group & are excited to begin their 1st loan cycle with KIVA. They want to infuse new capital into their businesses, such as weaving/selling traditional belts and textiles & convenience stores.

Many Guatemalan women do not have a formal education. This is the case of 34 year old María who has 6 children (ages 4-17). She is pleased the eldest 3 have studied through the 5th grade & second youngest is in the 2nd grade. María continues the tradition of weaving a variety of typical textiles. She also buys the colorful blouses (“huipiles”) from different locations. María is requesting a loan to buy a variety of different colored thread, as well as "huipiles".

María & her friends are grateful to KIVA investors for partnering with Friendship Bridge to provide the capital for the much needed loans. They also are grateful for the lessons in financing, women's rights, & good health practices. Thank you, KIVA investors, for helping the women create brighter futures!!!
