A loan helped to expand the financing and distribution of life improving technologies to rural women.
Bidhaa Sasa (meaning “Products Now” in Swahili) is a social enterprise based in rural Kenya that helps to improve the quality of life of families by making technology goods accessible and affordable to the under-served. They combine in-house credit and last-mile distribution to make products accessible and affordable. They use a Tupperware-style direct selling – by women for women – to deliver goods to clients’ doorsteps. The Problem: Life for rural families in Kenya is hard. The irony is that the goods and technologies (such as solar lamps, solar home systems or clean cookstoves) that would ease their daily challenges are not easily accessible. The Promise: Bidhaa Sasa combines the financing and distribution of products in a one-stop-shop, offering quality goods and after-sales services. They are product-neutral and offer a range of life-improving household items tailored to our customers’ preferences and desires. Bidhaa Sasa educates clients on product use, manage product warranties, and provide services to repair products that have broken. After almost 18 months and having reached more than 1,600 clients from a single hub in Webuye, Bihdaa Sasa is ready to expand by establishing four additional hubs in Western Kenya, increasing its workforce to 35 employees and reaching more than 10,000 clients by end of 2017. This loan will allow Bidhaa Sasa to buy inventory for 4 months of sale. Current stock consists of solar lamps and systems from Green Light Planet, solar radiolamps and cookstoves from Ecozoom and LPG cylinders from local suppliers.
