Artesanas Santa Catarina Group's story

Sololá is a very picturesque and interesting department/state in the western highlands of Guatemala. It is where the lovely Lake Atitlan is located, bordered by three magnificent volcanoes. It is also the home of 6 Maya Kaqchikel ladies in the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Artesanas Santa Catarina.” These ladies have traditional textile businesses selling colorful blouses (huipiles), colorful bags/purses (bolsas) and ornate belts (fajas). They also have handicraft businesses selling beaded coin purses and wallets. They are beginning their 6th loan cycle with Kiva.

Petrona is a lovely 46-year-old mother of 8 children, aged 3 months to 31 years. She has a second grade education. This has not stopped her from being a talented weaver, as well as the owner of a successful store where she sells all kinds of traditional textiles and handicrafts. She is motivated to work hard, and most of her children have had a primary and secondary education. Since Petrona was unable to continue with her formal education, she learned to weave and is well known for her beautiful, colorful belts or “fajas.” She is requesting a loan to buy traditional fabric and a variety of colorful thread.

Monthly meetings of the Trust Bank feature an educational training centered around one of four topics: women, families, health or business. These sessions are critical to the success of Petrona and her friends in the Trust Bank. In providing capital for the loans, Kiva investors play a key role in the lives of these ladies. Thank you!
