A loan helped to buy thread, shawls & blouses in bulk.

Santa Ana Group's story

The Guatemalan Western Highland state/department of Quiché is the home of the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank "Santa Ana". There are 8 Maya K'iché members who are primarily artisan traditional textile makers - making cortes (tube skirts), huipiles (blouses), fajas (belts) & perrajes (shawls). Some also raise chickens, cattle & goats. They are excited to begin their first loan with KIVA.

María is the President of this group. She is 46 years old & has 8 children (ages 7 to 24). María is an artisan who buys & sells traditional textiles in different marketplaces. She is requesting a loan to buy thread, shawls & blouses in bulk. Since she only had a 3rd grade education, she wants to generate more income to provide an education for her younger children. The older ones have already attended school. She also wants to provide a better quality of life for all.

Through the Friendship Bridge "Microcredit Plus" program of education + loans, María will be able to grow her knowledge with valuable business management skills such as controlling expenses, saving & investing. A facilitator helps the women learn using diagrams, pictures, role-playing & games. Along with the generous supportive loans from KIVA, the women are on a pathway out of poverty & into a brighter successful future for themselves, their families & their communities! Thank you!
