Las Flores Tecpanecas Group's story

“Las Flores Tecpanecas” is the name of the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank formed by seven Kaqchikel ladies in the department/state of Chimaltenango. 22-year-old Maria is a very industrious member of the group. She has only an eigth grade education and works hard at her business selling firewood to support her two children (aged two and four).

Maria is requesting a loan to buy more firewood at the wholesale level since there is much demand for it at this time of the year. Maria continues to learn about effectively managing her business (planning, investing, and savings) via the “Microcredit Plus” program of Friendship Bridge (loans + education). Each month, along with the other six ladies in the group, she learns about an aspect of four main topics that include women, health, families, and business.

The ladies of the Trust Bank co-guarantee each other’s loans. This is called “social collateral”. They learn about one another’s business plans and progress in the businesses that include the sales of food, new and used clothing, firewood, and charcoal.

Thank you, KIVA investors, for your kindness and concern in funding these much-needed loans! Maria and her friends are forging new roads out of poverty, benefitting themselves and their families.
