Amanecer Chuacruz Group's story

Ten Kaqchikel women have formed the Friendship Bridge trust bank “Amanecer Chuacruz” and are on their third loan cycle with Kiva. Their businesses range from small farms to animal husbandry and traditional textile production. They live in the department of Sololá, an area known for magnificent landscapes that include beautiful Lake Atitlan and the three surrounding volcanoes. They honor their historical and cultural traditions.

Silvia is 23 years old and single. She has a seventh grade education. A member of the group, Silvia has a traditional textile business making wrap-around tube skirts, or cortes, that have elaborate woven designs called jaspeado. She also has a convenience store. She is requesting a loan to buy a variety of colorful thread wholesale as well as chicken feed, basic grains, salt, sugar, pasta and medicines for her store.

Silvia and her nine friends in the group have learned a lot from the monthly educational training, part of the Microcredit Plus program of Friendship Bridge. The ladies make payments on their loans and gain valuable information about themselves (health, roles of women), their families (hygiene, nutrition), and their businesses (planning, budgeting, savings).

All the members of the trust bank send their gratitude to Kiva investors for funding their much-needed loans! They look forward to a brighter future benefiting themselves, their families and their community!
