A loan helped to buy a variety of colorful thread so that she can embroider more traditional blouses called huipiles, as well as other traditional clothing items.

Margaritas De Xenacoj Group's story

The Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Margaritas De Xenacoj” was formed in the state of Suchitepéquez. It is an area filled with the culture & traditions of the proud Kaqchikel Maya. Nine Kaqchikel ladies in the group are requesting a loan for their small businesses that include the purchase & sales of traditional textiles, the fabrication of these textiles, & also the sale of prepared foods. The group is on their 1st loan cycle with Kiva.

At their monthly meetings, the women make payments on their loans & participate in educational training, part of the "Microcredit Plus" program of the organization. Topics range from nutrition, hygiene and health, to prioritizing expenses, budgeting, planning & savings. Since the ladies have little or no formal education, they learn by playing games or seeing pictures & diagrams.

Carmen is a member with only a 1st grade education. She is 38 years old & works hard at her traditional textile business in order to improve the standard of living for her family. She wants her 3 children, who are currently in elementary & high school, to complete their education & embark upon successful careers. Carmen is requesting a loan to buy a variety of colorful thread so that she can embroider more traditional blouses called huipiles, as well as other traditional clothing items.

Thank you, Kiva investors, for your generosity & goodwill in funding these much appreciated loans. Carmen & her friends are opening up doorways into new & empowered lives!
