A loan helped add new clothing, racks and hangers for her growing stand.

Hawk Group's story

Modesta is a 51-year-old who lives in Kuwadzana, Harare. She says it is not easy being a single mother. Throughout her life, she has worked hard for her four daughters. In the past, Modesta worked in a clothing factory, working long hours with little time to see her children. She used some of her salary to place her daughters in day care but worried about their safety.

Four years ago she opened a small roadside stall on the busy streets of Kuwadzana selling second hand clothes, which she restocked from Mozambique. After a year into the business, Modesta came across a flyer describing Thrive’s services, which enable a group of small business owners to take out loans. Modesta decided to start her own group, Hawk 2, with her other friend who is also a clothing seller. She managed to improve her business and upgraded to having a flea market stand.

With every loan cycle, Modesta has been able to update her flea market stand with new inventory which she is restocking from South Africa and Lesotho. She will use her latest loan to add new clothing, racks and hangers for her growing stand. She is grateful for the support and assistance she is getting from Thrive and its partners.
