Lina Gissella's story

Portoviejo is the capital of Manabí Province in Ecuador. On April 16, 2016, an earthquake destroyed several businesses and homes. Many lives were lost. This occurred in the Río Portoviejo Valley. The city is rich in the production of vegetables, legumes, and tropical fruits for household consumption.

Sra. Lina is 45 years old and a single mother. She has two children, ages 21 and 25, who live with her. They live in a home of their own.

Doña Lina is hardworking and is constantly striving to help her family get ahead. She has a kiosk outside of the University of Portoviejo where she has a copy machine and sells stationery products such as pencils, loose-leaf paper, notebooks, folders, tape, and other items. Lina also provides binding services. Her work schedule is from 6:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M., Monday through Friday. She has an assistant. Lina has been doing this work for the past 15 years.

With this new loan, she will buy copy machine toner, printer ink, folders, as well as pay for the maintenance of her equipment. She has been with her Communal Bank for the past 29 loan cycles. Lina enjoys being a member because of the bi-weekly payment cycles and the low interest rates. Her dream is to have a cybercafé in her home with many computers.
