Renee Olivia's loan finished fundraising, but these other borrowers need your support

A loan helped to provide her community of weavers with a stable income, and to pay for materials needed in making native bags from seagrass.

Renee Olivia's story

Renee is a Filipino designer who works with women weavers from 50 villages in Eastern Samar to manufacture and export high-quality bags made from Pacific seagrass.

Her business was greatly affected when Super Typhoon Haiyan struck Eastern Samar in 2013, decimating many areas and leaving their workplaces destroyed.

Renee took out another loan in 2016, and displaying resiliency and spirit, Renee and her workers rebuilt their workplaces and started making bags again. Renee has now fully paid the loan and needs another loan to purchase raw materials to produce bags that will be sold in the domestic market and imported to markets like Japan and the USA.

Renee now works with numerous weavers and craftsmen in Eastern Samar, supporting their families and providing a much-needed boost for the use and production of local materials.

Other locals who produce mats, called “banigs”, which she uses to make her bags, have also greatly benefited from the business that Renee has generated.

Renee ensures that these locals have a market for the better part of the year, and sees that they receive good and fair prices for their products
