A loan helped to buy three small bulls to fatten up and sell.

Esperanza Group's story

Beautiful Lake Atitlan, which is bordered by three magnificent volcanoes, is located in Sololá and is home to the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank’s “Esperanza” or “Hope” Group. This group includes eight ladies who are committed to empowering themselves, educating their children and eliminating poverty in their lives.

These hopeful, hardworking ladies are in their fourth loan cycle with Kiva.

Maria is a member of the Trust Bank who is the mother of five children. Although she has no formal education, Maria has a successful business raising cattle. She is requesting a loan to buy three small bulls to fatten up and sell. She will earmark some of her profits to continue to educate her children.

The “Microcredit Plus” program of Friendship Bridge is of great use to Maria and her friends in the group. They are able to apply their newly acquired knowledge about themselves, their families and their businesses immediately. At each meeting, they learn about an aspect of health, business, family and women.

In providing capital for these loans, Kiva investors are playing a most important role. Thank you!
