Silvia Monserrate's story

Silvia is 27 years old, is in a common-law marriage, and has three children from this relationship who are 6, 5, and 2 years old. The oldest child is in school. Her spouse works independently. They live in the city of Portoviejo, an area with hardworking people who, little by little, are rebuilding their businesses and their lives after the terrible earthquake that occurred on April 16th.

In order to earn her own income and be able to help her spouse with the household expenses, Silvia works selling shoes by catalog. She sells door to door and works Monday through Friday. On Saturdays and Sundays she also works preparing and selling delicious encebollado (fish soup) with her mother. On those days, she sets up a small dining area in her mother’s house where they sell this delicious meal. She has had her business for one year and started it with the help of a loan.

She will use this loan to buy shoes and also ingredients to prepare the meals. She likes this because with the loans, she finances her business. Her dreams are to provide the best for her children.
