Sopheng's story

Sopheng is a Wedu ‘Rising Star’, selected for her leadership potential and keen desire to be a change-maker in her community. This is her story: I was born in Kampong Trach, Kampot Povince in Cambodia, and attended school there. My father is a self-employed vendor, and my mother is a farmer. I was awarded a full, merit-based scholarship to study medicine at University of Health Sciences, Phnom Penh. I was also supported by the Harpswell Foundation, which provided accommodation and food during the first 5 years of my study in Phnom Penh, which period has now ended. I have requested the FISA financing through Kiva, to cover my living and housing costs for 2 years - the 6th and final year of my studies and the first year of my internship. I intend to pursue neuroscience as a specialization. I am pained by the fact that there are many poor people who die because of a lack of access to medical care, especially in rural areas. I hope to eventually work in these areas. I am supporting TYDA, a voluntary organization of Doctors, while waiting to formally join them soon. I had also volunteered with New Day Cambodia, which educates children from the ‘scavenging’ community. Wedu’s leadership development and mentorship program and has given me clarity on my goals, and the confidence to pursue these. I am encouraged and motivated when meeting other Rising Stars too. My big dream is to expand access to medical care for the rural poor in my country, in a sustainable way.
