A loan helped to buy high quality thread at the wholesale level.

Las Margaritas De Patzicia Group's story

Chimaltenango is one of 22 states/departments in Guatemala and is known as the “cradle of the Maya Kaqchikel”. It is also the home of the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Las Margaritas de Patzicia” whose 9 members want to invest in their businesses of fruit and vegetable sales and traditional handicraft and textile production.

They are on their second loan cycle with Kiva. Maria is one of the members with a traditional textile business. She makes colorful blouses called “huipiles”, ornate belts or “fajas”, shawls or “perrajes”, as well as square cloths or “servilletas”. All have traditional designs. Maria takes custom orders and delivers them to stalls in the local market. Due to end of the year demand, she is requesting a loan to buy high quality thread at the wholesale level.

The ladies meet monthly to make payments on their loans and then participate in educational trainings that are centered around the idea of 4 pillars: women, family, health, business. Maria reached the 3rd grade of education, and it is noteworthy that only 44% of girls in Guatemala reach high school. She has 4 children who range in age from 10 to 19 years and she is proud that all are enrolled in elementary school or high school! The monthly trainings are of tremendous value to her.

With the help of Kiva's investors, Maria and her friends are poised to step into a brighter future, benefitting themselves and their families. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
