Yakubu's story

Yakubu is a Babban Gona maize farmer from Yakubu Sarki village. As a member of Babban Gona, Yakubu does not have to worry about failed crops and poor harvest.

Thanks to access to quality inputs and services, Yakubu expects to reap up to 35 bags per hectare of maize, double the national average of 18 bags per hectare in Nigeria.

Because he is a Babban Gona member, Yakubu does not have to forfeit making a profit by selling his maize at low harvest prices to cater for basic provisions for and him and his family.

Babban Gona offers a harvest advance loan to Yakubu in the form of a cash advance, equal to the price of maize at harvest that allows him to meet pressing household needs such as food and clothing.

With Babban Gona’s support, Yakubu will store his maize at harvest and sell it for up to 40 percent higher than the market price. With his maize stored, Yakubu can generate earnings of up to $1,000 per hectare, more than four times the average Nigerian farmer’s annual income.

With this loan and subsequent additional income, Yakubu will have sufficient funds to pay for his children’s school fees, securing their future and that of generations to come.
