James's loan finished fundraising,
but these similar borrowers just need a little more help to reach their goals!

A loan helped to purchase a solar-powered recharging station for mobile phones and LED lights for rural households that are without electricity.

James's story

James is a 35 year old man from the Rulindo district in the Northern province of Rwanda. His village has an estimated 150 households and does not have electricity. Most households have mobile phones which are critical tools for villagers to communicate with families and conduct business. Without electricity, people have resorted to dangerous alternatives such as using car batteries to recharge their mobile phones.

James is seeking a loan to purchase a solar panel and equipment to enable him to create a mobile phone charging business. With the proper equipment, he will be able to provide a safer and more affordable option for villagers to recharge phones. James will repay his Kiva loan by charging 13 cents USD per phone recharge, a price similar to the current car battery solutions. James also is a farmer and the additional income from his loan will be used to purchase health insurance.
