Rc Primary School, Pamlap Group's story

These are the teachers of the RC Primary School in Pamlap village, which is located on the outskirts of Makeni city, in northern Sierra Leone. RC Primary School was built during the 1973/74 academic year by the local community with help from the Catholic Church, and has a total of 14 staff members and 546 pupils. RC Primary School, like many other schools in this country, lacks adequate teaching and learning materials and is very short on accommodations. Despite that, its students do well in National Primary School Examinations. The school has also recently linked up with an English school as part of an exchange program, and organizes annual athletics events for its pupils. Mosses A. K. (below, second from left) is the head master at the school. He was born in Yele, in the Tonkolili district in northern Sierra Leone. He is married and has eight children. One of his children is grown, two are in college, two are in secondary schools and three in primary schools. Mosses has been a teacher for 44 years, and plans to use this loan to pay school fees for his children. “This loan is very big help,” he told me. “It is not easy to get someone to give you a loan in Sierra Leone, and teachers’ salaries are small,” he added. "If I can secure this loan, it will be a big relief for me."
