A loan helped bridge the gap between grant award reimbursements in order to develop the local food networks in Alabama.
I grew my first garden with my Papa in southeast Alabama when I was 5 years old. I’ve been hooked ever since. I studied agriculture at university. When I graduated I found some land with a cabin and started a garden. That garden turned into a career that would revolve around the production of healthy organic food using sustainable and ethical methods. With some help from like-minded folk, we started Mahone Creek Farm, a 160- acre property with ¼ acre garden and 159 ¾ fields and forest. We grew veggies and foraged mushrooms, berries and plants that we sold at the local farmers market. The operation expanded to include a CSA. A simple twist of fate (and a marked interest in international travel) led me to part ways with Mahone Creek Farm, and begin a 3-year stint as an international farm consultant to small-shareholder subsistence farmers. Since my son, Owen, was born in 2012, I have dedicated my professional life to renewing our local food systems and building local economic opportunities through community networks. We accomplish this by working with farmers and their local communities to connect their produce and products to local consumers through CSA’s, Farmers Markets, and Retail markets.
