Chit Thu -1 (C) Village Group's story

Residents of central Myanmar’s Pakokku Township, pictured above are Phyu, Thet, Hmat and Tin. They are loan clients in this village.

Due to unpredictable weather, villagers have to find additional income sources to ensure that they will have enough money to support the education and health of their families. Some therefore migrate to the cities or nearby mines in search of employment. For those who stay in the village, livestock raising is popular as a way to earn extra income. Also, they grow sesame, groundnuts, and chilies.

Phyu (2nd from the right) is the featured borrower. She is 30 years old and lives with her husband and their six months old baby. With this new loan supported by Kiva, Phyu plans to purchase necessary farming inputs such as seeds, high quality fertilizer and also pay for labor fees. With the good price her crops earn, she will be able to cover her family's expenses and save for the next planting season.
