Las Magaly Group's story

Suchitepéquez is a warm, coastal department in Guatemala that is the home of the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank loan group “Las Magaly.” The Microcredit Plus Program of Friendship Bridge is comprised of small loans and educational trainings. This program benefits nearly 30,000 mostly indigenous women in Guatemala. The ten ladies in Las Magaly work tirelessly to transform their own lives and those of their families and communities. Las Magaly members have all kinds of small businesses including raising poultry, selling catalogue products, and operating small bakeries and tortillerias or tortilla shops where tortillas are freshly made three times daily. Las Magaly is beginning its second loan cycle with Kiva. Clara is one of these women. She is 28 years old and married with two children who are two and ten. Her oldest child has finished fourth grade. Clara raises chickens that she sells by the pound and she also sells catalogue products. She is pleased to be learning about effective business tools such as investing and savings as well as how to prioritize her expenses. Because she has learned so much, Clara is building up her savings and plans to buy a piece of land! Clara is requesting a loan to buy 200 chicks to fatten up sell by the pound in different locations. Clara and her friends in Las Magaly send their thanks to Kiva investors for funding their much needed loans. With their newly acquired knowledge and small loans, they are stepping into a brighter future benefitting themselves, their families and their communities!!
