Ankabenkélenkan 2.1 Group's story

The Ankabenkélenkan 2.1 Group is a group of married women from the village of Fonfona in the main city of Koutiala (in Mali's third administrative region). They have an average age of 40 and six children each and live in large, extended traditional families. Rice is their main crop, with groundnuts their secondary crop. Keen to make a profit from their agriculture business, the members of the Ankabenkélenkan 2.1 group decided five years ago to join Soro Yiriwaso’s loan program. Having fully repaid their first four loans, they are now on their fifth country loan. The current loan will be used to buy rice and groundnut seeds and fertilizer at the markets in Fonfona, M’pessoba and Zansoni. After the harvest season, the crops are placed in storage for a certain period of time to increase in value before being sold at retail (often in bulk) at the market in M’pessoba or surrounding markets for cash to a clientele composed of retailers (mainly from the large towns) or consumers. Once the crops are sold, the members of the Ankabenkélenkan 2.1 group each expect to make a profit of CFA 75,000, which will be used to repay the loan and for current family expenses.
