Boiteko Group's story

Mapolelo is a 76-year-old widowed mother of two and grandmother of nine, living in a family of four. She resides in a two-room brick house that is well ventilated and warms up well. Mapolelo uses LPG, candles and paraffin in her home. This is very expensive for a woman who relies only on a pension fund and selling traditional beer. Life is not very pleasant. Mapolelo has requested a loan from Kiva lenders to purchase a clean cook stove, the kind that will provide her and 10 other people in her village living in similar circumstances the chance of cooking in a way that does not harm them and their families and does not require a lot of wood or expensive electricity, paraffin or gas. This stove can be started with a small amount of readily available biomass like dry twigs and dry cow dung that do not require lengths of time to collect. It does not produce smoke while burning, thus making it safe to be used inside homes. It provides better lighting, saves energy and time. For stove info please check www.africancleanenergy.com
