Cristo La Fuente 2 Group's story

Annette lives in an isolated batey community (a company town where sugar workers live) in the east of the Dominican Republic, a region known for its vast sugarcane fields and large Haitian and Haitian-Dominican population. Many Haitians come to the area to harvest and then plant the sugarcane, and some end up staying year-round. To supplement their husbands’ meager incomes, many women, like Annette and her group members who live in the batey, start small businesses to supplement their income throughout the year.

Annette is an experienced borrower who does her best to have whatever product her client might desire! Most recently, she has invested in the undergarment side of her business, purchasing underwear and bras. She also sells charcoal, gasoline, bread, and (her favorite) Haitian peanut butter called mamba! She dreams of being able to own her own house and to see her children pursue an education.

Thank you for your consideration of Annette and her group, Cristo la Fuente ('Christ the Fountain')!
