A loan helped to buy fabric & threads in different colors for her weaving buisness.

Las Cruces Group's story

The municipality of Totonicapán is in the Guatemalan State by the same name. It is in the Western Highlands & is the home of the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Las Cruces”. Every day, the women work hard at their businesses weaving, buying & selling traditional blouses & skirts, along with custom sewing traditional clothing. The 9 visionary small business artisans are beginning their 4th loan cycle with KIVA investors. The success of KIVA loans is exemplified by Juana who is 22 years old, married & has 2 children ages 2 & 6. She has a small family business weaving traditional wrap-around skirts (“cortes”) in Totonicapán’s customary design. Juana is requesting a new loan to buy fabric & threads in different colors. Her wooden loom is made especially for weaving the traditional skirts. Thanks to Friendship Bridge’s “Microcredit Plus” (loans + education), Juana learned good business skills & has been able to increase her capital & grow her small business. She also has been able to invest in another business raising & selling chickens. The profits from the businesses has helped her dreams for her children to go to school to become professionals with better lives & prosperous businesses. This is very important to her since she had to stop school at the 5th grade. Juana & her friends in “Las Cruces” thank KIVA investors & Friendship Bridge for helping these Maya K’iche women’s dreams become reality!!!
