Estrellita De Oro Group's story
The Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Estrellita de Oro” group made up of 11 Maya K’iche members is located in Totonicapán, a city in the Western Highlands of Guatemala. The majority of the women here make different types of clothing, especially the traditional woven wrap-around skirts called “cortes” and the ornate blouses called “huipiles”. It is also an area known for carpentry. The women of “Estrellita de Oro” are about to begin their very first loan cycle with Kiva investors. Eva is a member of the Trust Bank who is 44 years old and the mother of six children between the ages of 13 and 26 years old. She had a 5th grade education. Eva works hard in her business making traditional blouses and aprons in order to provide an education for her children. She is requesting a loan so that she can buy a sewing machine, fabrics, zippers, threads & adornments so that she can create new designs for her current customers, as well as attract new ones. On behalf of the members of “Estrellita de Oro”, Eva thanks Kiva investors for trusting them with loans & she thanks Friendship Bridge for the monthly informal educational trainings that provide the group with valuable knowledge about various topics. The combination of microcredit loans and informal education, called “Microcredit Plus”, is a winning combination for these ladies. Thank you, Kiva investors for funding these much-appreciated loans!
