A loan helped to purchase more logs of wood to expand her firewood business.

Sharmila's story

Twenty-nine-year-old Sharmila lives in Dakhin Parangerpar, a small village in Falakata in West Bengal. She is a mother of three children (two sons and a daughter). Her two children are studying in different grades in the local village school and the other is a toddler. Sharmila's husband is a farmer by occupation and Sharmila is engaged in a firewood-selling business.

She purchase logs of wood from the village and neighboring villages and cuts them into small pieces, then resells it. There is a great demand for firewood in her locality. Her main customers are her neighbors and villagers. She has chosen this business as firewood is used as a fuel for cooking in rural West Bengal. But due to the lack of capital, she cannot expand this business.

Thus Sharmila applied for a loan from Kiva through BJS to purchase more logs of wood for her business. This loan will increase her income and business profit. She wants to save money for her children’s education.

She is grateful to her lenders for this support.
