Mujeres Group's story
The Department (State) of Sololá is in the Western Highlands of Guatemala. The region has a number of Friendship Bridge Trust Banks like “Mujeres”. It is located in Nahualá where the population is predominantly Maya K’iche speaking & where the women proudly wear the exquisitely embroidered traditional Nahualá. There are 7 members whose businesses are the beautiful textiles which also include light-weight blankets that they sell within the community, as well as outside the community. Miriam is one of the members. She is 22 years old, married & has a 2 year old child. Miriam makes & sells candies that she sells in Nahualá, at festivals, and in different towns surrounding Nahualá. She is requesting a loan to purchase large quantities of sorghum, sugar, food coloring, flour & lemon to increase her inventory. Education is very important to Miriam because she only was able to attend school through the 8th grade. Her greatest dream is to provide her child with a good education, good health, food and clothing. She will be able to do this with a loan from Kiva investors along with monthly non-formal education sessions provided by a Facilitator from Friendship Bridge who uses charts, pictures & cards to engage Miriam & her “Mujeres” friends in valuable lessons like business management, health, hygiene and the use of medicinal plants. Thank you!!!
