Lucy's loan finished fundraising, but these other borrowers need your support

A loan helped to buy another dairy cow of quality breed to satisfy the demand for milk in her area.

Lucy's story

Lucy is a smallholder farmer. She is an extraordinary woman with a great personality. She is a role model, a mentor, and an inspiration to many young farmers in her village because of her resilience despite personal challenges and her passion to support her children as a primary caregiver.

For the past 10 years, she has been involved in mixed farming, and her primary source of income has been growing maize, cabbage, and tomatoes, as well as keeping dairy cows. Lucy has been able to provide nutritious food for her family. After she lost her formal job, the role of primary caregiver of the family became overwhelming because of the responsibility of feeding the whole family. This challenge has not made her give up. “I have to do something for my family," she said.

Lucy is requesting a loan to buy an additional quality dairy cow. The dairy cow that she plans to buy is not just an ordinary cow, but a quality breed that will be producing between 10 and 20 liters of milk per day. This will immediately translate to more profits and increased income levels. The profit from selling milk will be used to repay the loan in full, and the extra income will be used to increase her business enterprise.

Lucy is very visionary, and in the near future, she intends to start adding value to her milk business by packaging the milk before selling it. She will also start selling other dairy products, such as yogurt. An improved income level will assure her family of a secure future. By joining Juhudi Kilimo, which assists smallholder farmers, she will also benefit from free extension services and links to markets.

Lucy believes that if women smallholder farmers had the same access to resources as large scale farmers, the number of people dying because of hunger could be reduced. Be inspired and make a loan!
