Las Flores Salcaja Group's loan finished fundraising,
but these similar borrowers just need a little more help to reach their goals!

A loan helped to buy two dozen more hens to increase the number of eggs she can sell to her customers.

Las Flores Salcaja Group's story

The mountainous region in the Department of Quetzaltenango has many small towns and municipalities. Salcajá is one of the municipalities and on its outskirts is the home of the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Las Flores Salcajá". “Las Flores Salcajá" has eight entrepreneurial women who are beginning their second loan cycle with Kiva. The women need more capital to invest in their small business of raising pigs, chickens, and making traditional wrap-around skirts called “cortes”. Salcajá is known for its cortes! Thirty-six-year-old Gladis is one of the entrepreneurial women who was able to finish school through the sixth grade. She is married and has two children, 3 and 8 years of age. Gladis has a large chicken farm with wonderful egg-laying hens that make it possible for her to sell the eggs by the dozen. She is requesting a loan for two dozen more hens to increase the number of eggs she can sell to her customers. Each month, Gladis and her friends in "Las Flores Salcajá" meet to make payments on their loans. Then, with a facilitator from Friendship Bridge who speaks their native language, they participate in the monthly educational training that can be on a variety of valuable topics like women’s and children’s health, the use of medicinal plants, and business tools like bookkeeping, budgeting, saving, and investing. Thank you, Kiva investors, for helping Gladis and her friends at "Las Flores Salcajá" realize their dreams!
