A loan helped grow my business to a more sustainable number of beehives.
I grew up in forested and rolling hills of coastal California. Ever since I was a young child my love of nature has always been a focal point in my life. I spent many days of my youth wondering from where the Pacific Ocean breaks on the rocky shores, to the tops of the green mountains I lived in. At this young age of my life I developed a love of living things and a divine curiosity that remains with me today. After many journeys in my youth I returned to my beloved Santa Cruz Mountains, and thats where I remain today. In 2008 I was in need of a change. My partner Audra and I had just had our first son Jalani (we now have a daughter Kiara as well). I was working as a commercial fisherman and a carpenter at the time. I no longer wished to spend months at sea away from my young family and it seemed to me the quality of the carpentry jobs and the environmental sensitivities was corroding. I needed something I could believe in, something that fit my life and sensibilities, something I could do to give back to the earth. Thats when I found bees. It was just a chance meeting with another beekeeper that led me into the world of profession beekeeping, but it really felt like fate. I was immediately enthralled by these tiny creatures and their life cycles. After a few years of working with other beekeepers I began to see ways in which a beekeeping business could be run more efficient, more profitable and more sustainable. Audra and I began our own beekeeping business in 2011. With diligence, thoughtfulness, observation and lots of hard work our operations has grown to over 200 hives. We use our bees to pollinate crops, produce queen bees and started beehives, and produce amazing silky golden honey from our local organic farms and wild mountains.
